M23 Forces Advance in North Kivu Amid Fragile Ceasefire
The March 23 Movement (M23) rebel group has continued its offensive in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, seizing several villages in North Kivu province despite a ceasefire declared earlier this year. Government troops reported that M23 fighters captured the strategic town of Kiwanja on Saturday, pushing further toward the provincial capital, Goma. The Congolese army said it is mobilising additional forces to counter the advance, while the United Nations peacekeeping mission (MONUSCO) called for both sides to respect the ceasefire and protect civilians.
The ceasefire, brokered in February between the DRC government and M23, was intended to halt hostilities that have displaced thousands and caused numerous civilian casualties. However, sporadic clashes have persisted, and both parties have accused each other of violations. The latest movement by M23 follows a series of negotiations that stalled over demands for the release of detained fighters and political concessions.
Since 2012, eastern Congo has been plagued by armed conflict involving multiple rebel groups, ethnic militias, and foreign actors, all vying for control of mineral-rich territories. The region’s instability has fueled a humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations estimating over five million people in need of assistance. International observers warn that renewed fighting could exacerbate the already dire situation for civilians and undermine peace efforts.
The Congolese government has appealed to regional partners and the African Union for diplomatic support, while M23 spokespersons claim their actions are a response to government non‑compliance with the ceasefire terms.
