An American citizen who was traveling in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has tested positive for Ebola virus disease, according to health officials. The individual was admitted to a treatment centre in the North Kivu province after developing symptoms consistent with the disease. Local health authorities have initiated contact tracing and have begun monitoring people who may have been exposed to the patient, including fellow travelers and staff at the facility where the patient was treated. The Ministry of Health confirmed that the patient is receiving care in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO) protocols and that no further cases have been reported so far.

Ebola outbreaks have occurred sporadically in the DRC since the virus was first identified in the country in 1976. The most recent major outbreak, declared in 2022, affected several provinces in the east and prompted extensive vaccination campaigns. The region remains vulnerable due to limited health infrastructure, frequent displacement of populations, and ongoing insecurity.

The United States Embassy in Kinshasa has been notified of the case and is coordinating with Congolese authorities to ensure the patient receives appropriate medical attention. The embassy also advised U.S. citizens in the area to follow preventive measures, such as avoiding contact with bodily fluids of sick individuals and seeking immediate medical care if symptoms appear.

Health officials emphasized that early detection and rapid response are critical to containing the virus and preventing further spread.
