MONUSCO: At least 632 civilians killed in North Kivu, Ituri in three months
The United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has reported a significant number of civilian casualties in the eastern regions of the country. According to the mission, at least 632 civilians were killed in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri over the past three months. This surge in violence is part of the ongoing conflict in eastern DR Congo, which has been plagued by instability and violence for decades, fueled by the presence of numerous armed groups and militias. The conflict has its roots in ethnic and territorial disputes, as well as competition for control of the region's rich natural resources. The situation has been further complicated by the involvement of external actors and the lack of effective governance, leading to a protracted humanitarian crisis. The recent spike in civilian casualties has raised concerns about the protection of vulnerable populations and the need for a comprehensive solution to the conflict. MONUSCO has been working to support the Congolese government in stabilizing the region and protecting civilians, but the challenges remain significant.
