Eighteen Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles have been delivered to Uganda’s Ministry of Health to aid the ongoing Ebola response in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The vehicles, shipped from Japan and assembled locally, will be used to transport medical teams, supplies, and patients between remote health posts and treatment centers near the border with Uganda. Officials said the rugged 4x4s are suited to the region’s poor road conditions and will improve the speed of outreach activities in areas where the virus remains active.

The land cruisers were provided through a partnership involving the United Nations World Health Organization, the Ugandan government, and a private logistics firm. They are expected to be deployed within the next week, with priority given to districts bordering the DRC’s North Kivu and Ituri provinces, where recent flare‑ups have prompted heightened surveillance and vaccination campaigns.

The eastern DRC has been plagued by recurrent Ebola outbreaks since 2018, alongside a protracted armed conflict involving government forces, rebel groups, and foreign militias. The insecurity has hampered health interventions, limited access to remote communities, and contributed to the spread of disease. International agencies have repeatedly called for improved security and logistics to contain the virus and protect civilians.

The arrival of the vehicles marks one of several logistical upgrades aimed at strengthening the cross‑border health response, which also includes mobile labs and expanded vaccination teams.
